The procedures described here meet the global standards of news photography and IPTC* regulations.

The IPTC is the International Press Telecommunications Council. Made up of the world’s main news agencies, newspaper editors, and other suppliers in the news sector, it’s in charge of the development and maintenance of standard techniques used for practically all of the main organizations dedicated to disseminating news around the entire world. Professional programs for editing and cataloguing your images.

There are many professional programs for editing and cataloguing photographs. We recommend:

  • Adobe Photoshop (Program for editing and cataloguing images)
  • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (Program for editing and cataloguing images)
  • Photo Mechanic (Program for cataloguing images)

We should know how these programs work for the correct use of the Metadata.

To add the information of each image individually with Adobe Photoshop CS we should look in the FILE menu for the FILE INFO

Using the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom program we can add the information to each image or each group in the LIBRARY tab and visualize the edition of METADATA in the right-hand menu.

With Photo Mechanic, to add the information to each one of the images or each group we must look for the “IPTC stationery pad” option, where the metadata form can be found and then filled out.

Information necessary for each image.

The information that we must add to our images needs to be structured in the following way:

  1. File name
  2. Dimensions, size, and resolution
  3. Title
  4. Country, State/Province, and City
  5. ISO Country Code
  6. Date of creation
  7. Key words (It is important to write the greatest number of key words that represent the images that you are publishing. In this way, they will have a greater possibility of being found through our search engine.)
  1. File name.

Clearly and correctly write the file name as a summary. The name should clearly specify the image’s contents.

  2. Dimensions, size, and resolution.

BLIPOINT’s Premium Gallery system will automatically recognize everything with regards to the dimensions, size, and resolution of the uploaded images. Our potential clients are interested in knowing about the quality of the images before purchasing them.

We should bear in mind that the images that we publish must have the following characteristics:

    • They should have 300 dpi.
    • The image should be between 2 and 4 Megas in size.
    • The images should be saved in .jpg format.
  3. Country, State/Province, and City.

This point refers to the place where the image was taken or created. The more information provided, the more precise the information generated will be. Small and capital letters can be used.

  4. ISO Country Code.

They are important search codes, because they function like tags that are more easily found than the “country” field. As well, they solve language problems. For example, if an English speaker is looking for Brazil, and writes Brasil, the search engine will only provide the images that have Brazil as a country. But the ISO code is universal. Publication programs, in general, have all of the countries’ codes, and they are easy to find. More information at www.iptc.org.

  5. Creation date.

This refers to the date or day that the image was taken. In the case of digital photography, the information is automatically recorded, always and if the program’s function is active. BLIPOINT’s Premium Gallery system automatically recognizes the date on which the image was created.

  6. Key words.

Key words facilitate the search for images since they identify, relate, and limit the results to specific, concrete content. They should be separated by commas. For example: house, flower, sea, mountain, etc. For an important figure, the first key word is their full name. Then, words should be added that have to do with their occupation, the company they work for, etc. Key words are those used by the search engine to find images. In the case of images that are not of people, the key words must be all of those that can be directly related to the image.

    1. H1. There are elements that are inherent to all images, such as:

      • Place
      • Category
      • Concrete nouns. Eg. car, house, sky, etc.
    2. 1. However, there are others that can be present. For example:

      • Concept or theme. Eg. Health, Beauty, Technology, Home, Personal Care, etc.
      • Adjectives or attributes. Eg. red, white, brilliant, rusted, beautiful, healthy, young, etc.
    3. Lastly, there are key words that come with special characteristics. For example, the names of important figures have their own names: Salvador Garmendia, Pablo Neruda. So the names of important figures should be added as key words.

    4. Important: key words should not be accented.
